Arts Integration: Learning that Lasts

Arts integration is an instructional method that helps learners to achieve comprehension by employing art practices. Arts integration instruction links an art form with different subject areas (The Kennedy Center). Curricula enriched in integrated arts activities can help students with academic achievement and retention. As an arts educator, I am always thrilled to see students master a core subject concept through the integration of the arts. Most recently, we (ArtsC) asked a group of students to explain what they enjoyed most about our Reading Workshops. One student said that the workshops were fun because it did not feel as if they were learning about reading. We have noticed that through our arts integrated workshops, students gain understanding and confidence in their ability to learn. We love arts integration because it is an effective way to differentiate instruction. Our program continuously connects core and fine arts subjects and concepts.
